Illinois Nationally Ranked Wrestlers

Illinois has the reputation for being the best state in the country when it comes to the international styles. And if there have been some states catching up in freestyle, the state still holds a commanding lead over the rest when it come to Greco.

But that’s not to say Illinois isn’t also among the top folkstyle states. It is. And this season, 21 wrestlers finish in the top 25. While the number is a bit lower than CA, and obviously the complete PA line up, it is on par with either PA division and the rest of the country.

The weight with the most wrestlers earning national recognition is 106, with 4. After that is 157 with 3. There are 3 weights that the state did not have a wrestler finish in the top 25: 120, 144, and 190.

There were two seniors finishing their careers with 4 state titles: Ben Davino and Dillan Johnson. Both also picked up the best wins of anyone in the state: Davino beating Marcus Blaze and Johnson beating Koy Hopke. The pair also finish at the top of their weights.

16 of the 21 compete in the 3A division, 4 compete in 2A, and 1 wrestler from 1A made the top 25. That is Noah Wenzel (215) from Dakota.

215 is the only weight that had at least one wrestler from all 3 divisions in the top 25.

Every wrestler ending the season ranked was ranked entering the state tournament. The biggest riser through the season is Collin Carrigan.

The biggest discrepancy between me and other ranking outlets seems to be Allen Woo. I have him #17 in the country and it appears no one else has him ranked.

The class breakdown is as follows: Senior (9), Junior (4), Sophomore (5), Freshman (3).
